Culinary Guide-David McIntyre (visiting chef instructor!)
4 Night Accommodations (2 people per room)
4 Breakfasts
French Quarter Culinary History and Tasting Tour
City/
Garden District/Cemetery/Katrina Tour
Jazz Tour

Event Details
Join us this year over Martin Luther King Weekend to one of the most celebrated cities of the American South and considered the "Paris of the South"-New Orleans!  This city is home to a diverse music culture, world-renowned cuisine, voodoo, Mardi Gras, the French Quarter, and great times.  Despite being hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans is still the tourist hot-spot it always has been.  Join the fun this weekend and have your money go to a city that is still rebuilding itself from this disaster but remains with an unbreakable spirit of life.  The best way to support it is to come and visit!~

Our non-stop departure from JFK airport in the late afternoon, arriving in New Orleans in the early evening.  We will transfer to our hotel check in/wash up before having a late lunch.  We will have a chance to walk around the city a bit before going for our first cocktail and dinner in the French Quarter.

After breakfast we will start our first day in New Orleans with a City/Garden District/Cemetery/Katrina Tour

This tour includes a short walk through the Historic Garden District-the most beautiful neighborhood in New Orleans.  Sites include the Manning family home, Ann Rice mansion, and the "Benjamin Button" house.  This district was home to wealthy sugar and cotton planters/factors/brokers prior to the Civil War-when New Orleans was the largest and wealthiest city in the South.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating storms to strike the Gulf Coast in decades.  Its impact on the region was nothing more than devastating.  Much of New Orleans is situated at or below sea level making our levees imperative during such a storm.  On August 29, 2005, those levees failed...and left much of the city of New Orleans in ruins.

On this Katrina tour, we'll be taken to severely devastated sites around the city, and see the process being made in rebuilding this great city.  You will also learn how Louisiana's disappearing wetlands are negatively impacting New Orleans' hurricane protection system and what must be done to restore this vital barrier to protect us against storm surge.

After the tour, we'll go on a quick French Quarter walking tour, ending at a local place to have lunch.  For the remainder of the afternoon, you will have a chance to explore the French Quarter on your own or an optional activities such as shopping, hands on cooking class, carriage ride, aquarium, or segway tours.  In the early evening we'll be guided through an Historic Cocktail Tour sampling cocktails born in New Orleans including the Sazerac, Vieux Carre, Hurricane, and Ramos Gin Fizz (and others!), in the bars where they were first created.

This morning we'll have a light breakfast so we can enjoy a traditional New Orleans Jazz Brunch!  This is a meal not to be missed!  After brunch we will go on a walking tour of New Orleans Music!  We will explore the world's richest musical city, starting with the Legends Park statues of Louis Armstrong, Pete Fountain, and Fats Domino.  This tour includes recorded music and advice on where to catch the world's greatest musical talent.  After a fine dinner in the evening, we'll go watch some of the world's greatest Jazz talent.

This morning you will have the opportunity after breakfast for any optional activities you'd like to do (bike tour, swamp or plantation tour, ride the street car, market, aquarium, segway tours, cemetery tour, horse & carriage, voodoo tour, and more!)

Eat a light lunch because at 2pm we'll be going on a French Quarter Culinary History and Tasting Tour.  This tour will immerse us in the history of New Orleans and how unique cuisine evolved.  We'll tour selected historic restaurants and discuss their culinary contributions.  We will learn to appreciate the difference between Creole and Cajun cuisine, and will hear of the varied ethnic influences that contribute to New Orleans cuisine.  Some of our samples seafood gumbo, red beans & rice, beef brisket with Creole sauce, pralines, muffulettas, gelato, turtle soup, and shrimp remoulade.

In the early evening you'll have the choice to join on an optional Haunted Tour or Voodoo & Cemetery Tour.
Then get ready to go all out on our last night in this awesome city!

Have a chance to sleep in, or get yourself up to do some last minute shopping, touring, or walking around before we leave for the airport in the late afternoon for our early evening flight.

Optional Activities
Swamp Tour, Hands on Cooking Creole and Cajun Food, Plantation Tour, Haunted Tour or Voodoo & Cemetery Tour, Segway Tour, Aquarium, Bicycle Tour, Horse & Carriage, Market and More!

Via Ferrata-noun-"a mountain route equipped with fixed ladders, cables, and bridges in order to be accessible to climbers and walkers"  Orgin: (Italian) literally 'iron road'

Via Ferrata systems have been been popular for decades in Europe, but are relatively new and almost unheard of in the USA.  This Via Ferrata is 3.5 miles long, 1,085 feet elevation gain/loss, 280 feet of vertical exposure, 200 feet long 150 feet high suspension bridge.

How difficult is it?
It is difficult to compare the Via Feratta experience to anything else.  It can be very demanding, or not so demanding depending on your fitness level.  It can also be emotionally taxing depending on your level of comfort with heights.  It is not recommended for anyone trying to overcome fear of heights!
No prior experience is necessary to do the Via Feratta.

How does it work?
The design of the Via Ferrata allows you to be in control of your own fall protection equipment.  The route is equipped with a series of cable loops which you attach yourself to using a double lanyard and two carabiners.  You will be attached to the cable a 100% of the time by at least one carabiner while on the Via Ferrata.  There should never be a time you are not clipped into the system by at least one carabiner.

All meals on board are included, along with a New England Lobster Bake!  This is an unique and awesome trip of the summer that you will never forget.

On Thursday we will depart around 4:00pm from NYC and drive to our hotel in Maine for the evening.  On Friday morning, we'll have the chance to explore the lovely seaport town of Camden.  Try some lobster rolls, shop, or look at the beautiful sailboats.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday....each day on the schooner is full of surprises!  One day we may find ourselves near a small fishing village where we can walk around and explore.  We may find a deserted island where we can have a good old New England Lobster Bake!  You will have the opportunity in the practice of handling the lines of the boat and helping the crew sail. At night, you may even choose to sleep on deck watching the stars. Look out for wildlife!  Always a chance to see seals, ospreys, porpoises, or even a whale can be seen.  The sunsets.....stars....are spectacular!

It's all about the food!.....This historic schooner is well known for its scrupulous meals made by the seasonal cook (who's also the captains brother!).  He makes everything from scratch on the boat with fresh ingredients from the local farm markets.  Homemade ice cream,  granola, cinnamon buns, peach muffins, are just some examples of his yummy food.
2 Dinners, 2 Breakfasts, 1 Lunch, and Snacks are included on board.  You are guaranteed to have a happy tummy!

On Sunday we'll return to Rockland in the late morning.  We will be sad to leave our historic schooner, saying goodbye to the crew and captain.  With so many memorable moments, you will be eager to let your friends and family know what a wonderful time you had!  We will take some time to explore the town of Rockland and eat the last of the lobster rolls before heading back to NYC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get sea sick?  Very rarely do people get sick on board the historic schooner.  The reason is due to large islands that break up ocean swells.
What are accommodations like?  There are double beds and bunk beds.  If you sign up as a couple, you will get your own double bed, if single, you will get a bunk bed in a room with one other person of the same gender.  Bathrooms are shared with cabins near yours, all very close to bathroom with no need to climb a ladder.  For an extra adventure, bring your sleeping bag and sleep on deck under the stars....
Are there showers or hot water?  Yes on both.  The boat has its own filtering system and heats the water from the stove, so the shower has nice warm water.  The shower is on deck, and if you'd like to take a shower, a curtain can be put up for you.  Most people who do this short trip skip the shower and instead just wash up.
Is alcoholic beverages included?  Alcohol is not included, but you may bring your own to keep in the boat fridge to drink whenever you'd like.
Please email if you have any other further questions!

Thursday, October 13-Departure
Our Continental Airlines flight departs Newark at 4:15pm, arriving in Phoenix at 6:39pm.  We will drive from Phoenix to our accommodations inside the park.  We'll stop for dinner on the way to our hotel in the South Rim.

Friday, October 14-Hiking the Bright Angel Trail
After breakfast, we'll begin our first hike-Bright Angel Trail.  This is one of the most popular trails which leads all the way down to the bottom of the canyon.  We will be descending to about 2,500 feet-not to the bottom~ (7mile round-trip).  This hike is steep, with stunning views with every step.  We will have a packed lunch with us to eat at an area with spectacular views-taking your breath away.

In the evening, we'll enjoy a well deserved cocktail on the veranda at the El Tovar Hotel's Lounge.

Saturday, October 15-Havasu Falls or South Kaibab Trail

The colors and peace of the canyon are breathtaking-Bring your camera.

This is a hidden gem, and in my option, a must trail!  Owned by the Havasupai Tribe, ("People of the blue-green waters"), the Havasu Falls sparkles with azure streams plunging more than 100ft against red sandstone walls, ending in a pool with constant water temperature of about 70 degrees-and opportunity for an invigorating mineral-rich bath.  The trail is mostly flat, with about 1.5miles of uphill.  What makes this hike a difficult one is the length-which is 10miles one way-but worth every effort to see this magnificant waterfall!

Once we return, we'll claim our seats to watch the stunning sunset at Hopi Point.

Sunday, October 16-Sedona & Home
After breakfast, we'll pack up and drive to the "Red Rock Country"-Sedona.  This picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral, and Thunder Mountain.  At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that is wildly wonderful.

We will have the whole day into the evening to explore Sedona.  You may choose to go hiking on the numerous Red Rock Trails, explore the many art galleries, relax at a day spa, or explore the town and everything it has to offer.  We will leave Sedona for the airport after dinner for our evening flight.

Join us for a day of Holiday Shopping in two quaint and lovely "sister towns."  These two towns are connected by a bridge in NJ and PA.  Find your last minute holiday gifts withe a unique touch and enjoy the feel of the holidays from the streets and stores of New Hope and Lambertvile.

New Hope PA:
This is a charming little village along the Delaware River and Delaware Canal that has the "old town feel."  Many people come to visit the art galleries, to some it's a place to spend enchanting romantic weekends.  New Hope's natural beauty and walking down by the riverside has always been mesmerizing.

Lambertville NJ:
Just across the bridge is the "sister town" to New Hope.  This charming town has changed little over the last one hundred years.  It's nestled on the east bank of the Delaware River.  Lambertville is known as the "The Antique Capital of New Jersey," and definitely lives up to the title.  Lambertville's many galleries have created a haven for art collectors.

From the book stores, galleries, clothing, fine crafts, jewelry, specialty stores, chocolate and bakery items, and of course cafes and restaurants, these two towns will definitely keep you busy for a day!
